Guidance Department

10/17 Counselor Corner

Hello Eagle families! In case you missed our presentation at open house, we wanted to share a little about what the school counselors can help with at HCMS.  In order to provide a comprehensive guidance program, we support your students by addressing their academic, career, and personal/social needs through classroom guidance lessons, small groups, and individual meetings.

The counselors have visited all of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade Social Studies classes to introduce themselves and conduct a needs assessment for support groups. Some of the groups we may have available this year are stress management, coping with grief and loss, family changes support, and anger management. We may add others based on the students’ requests on their needs assessment. We will be sending out permission forms for students who are interested. If you would like your student to be included in one of the groups, please contact your grade level counselor and we can include them on our lists.

We encourage parents to gain access to their Skyward and Canvas login information in order to monitor your student’s grades and work completion.  The easiest way to view your student’s most up to date grades is on Skyward. When you login to your Skyward parent account via, you will click on the gradebook link. If you click on the actual number grade in blue under the current report card (RC2) column, it will show you all of their assignments, type of assignment, and scores for each assignment. You can also click on the “show all” button next to missing assignments at the top of the gradebook in order to see any assignments that have been marked as missing.

There is also a way for parents to receive grading alerts to their email from Canvas. You will need to turn on the setting in Canvas using the following steps: Parent signs in to Classlink with email that is registered in Skyward, Go to Canvas App, Click on Account (which is located at the top left corner in Canvas), Click on Notifications from the dropdown list, and choose Enable grading alerts.

Report cards for 1st nine weeks will be distributed on October 19th, so please review your students’ grades and progress. If you would like to schedule a parent teacher conference to discuss any concerns, please contact Ms. LaRouche at [email protected] so that she can schedule an appointment.

The counselors will also be holding an interest meeting for our Kindness Club. The goal of our club will be to promote good character and spread kindness to all students and staff to ensure a positive school atmosphere. We would love to have your student join us! We will be meeting in room B103 at 8:45am on October 22nd. Ms. Angoy is also hosting a Gay Straight Alliance Club that meets on Thursday from 4-5pm in the library.
