ESOL AT HUNTER'S CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL
A Program Description
Hunter’s Creek Middle School is very proud of its successful ESOL Program. This program consists of knowledgeable and dedicated teachers and support staff who make it their mission to provide the ESOL students with comprehensible instruction and a learning environment that is conducive to the language acquisition process.
The ESOL students are placed on a certain team at 6th and 7th grade level. Sixth graders are on the Vikings Team, seventh graders are on the Knights Team, and eighth graders are divided among the math, science and history teachers of that grade. On each team, the ESOL students comprise about 1/3 of the team’s students. The other students on the team are non-LEP or native English speakers.
Content area (Math, Science and Social Studies) instruction is on grade-level and follows the appropriate Sunshine State Standards. Content area teachers modify their lessons and provide appropriate accommodations for the ESOL students. Our bilingual paraprofessionals attend these content area classes and assist the ESOL students with their linguistic needs.
Language Arts is taught separate from the mainstream. These classes are divided by grade level. These teachers follow the appropriate Sunshine State Standards, National ESL Standards and provide any necessary modifications/accommodations to the curriculum.
In addition, we offer ESOL students the required Intensive Reading Classes for students who scored a level 1 or 2 on the FCAT and the Developmental Language Arts class for beginning level proficiency students. ESOL students are enrolled in these classes based on the criteria handed down by the state of Florida.
We hope to continue offering the same rigorous academics to our ESOL students that we have in the past. Testing data does lend support to the success of our Program Model. We look forward to many more years of success.
